On Wednesday, May 17 a group of SJA students attended an Equity Conference organized by the York Catholic District School Board, at St. Elizabeth Catholic High School. The theme of the
Conference was:” Be a Changemaker”. In preparation for the conference students read the book, Me and White Supremacy: How you can Fight Racism And Change the World Today, by Layla Saad. We were honoured to have author, Layla Saad join the conference virtually. One of our very own Grade 12 students, Aliyah Jaffer, was on the panel of students who directed the
discussion by presenting questions generated by conference participants. Students also participated in a number of other events that day which included student moderated workshops on various Equity issues and listening to a keynote speech from YCDSB teacher: Cynthia
Bettio, 2022 recipient of the Governor General’s Award for teaching history. All agreed that it was a life changing experience. SJA Equity Lead, Ms. Caterina Giordano, and her student Equity team are looking forward to sharing their new learning with the SJA school community in
the coming school year.
