The ESL Department started off the 2021-2022 school year with a warm welcome to new students and a display of leadership by our senior students. On August 26th and 27th, the ESL Department at St. Joan of Arc CHS along with the Settlement and Education Partnership in York Region (SEPYR) hosted the NOW Program which welcomed new students to the community and helped prepare them for a successful start to the school year. Student mentors led a variety of activities that helped newcomers gain important information in their transition to high school at SJA! Over the course of the semester thus far English Language Learners, both remote and in-person, have had opportunities to learn and grow academically and socially. Students have been supported by the department with new efforts including weekly Homework Help after school, an interactive website to facilitate communication at home, and monthly workshops for parents and students in partnership with SEPYR covering a variety of important student issues. If the start of the school year is any indication, 2021-2022 will be a successful and memorable year for English Language Learners at St. Joan of Arc CHS. Look out for our Cultural Club starting this Fall!
